Water damage to a gravel driveway is sneaky. It doesn't happen all at once - it chips away, rain by rain, until you've got erosion eating the edge, soft spots in the middle, and a driveway that's basically held together by hope. That's exactly what we were dealing with here.

The setup was classic: a hill sitting right above the driveway with nowhere for the runoff to go except straight across the surface. Over time, that moving water undercut the edge where the driveway meets the road and started washing out material. The fix wasn't just throwing more gravel down. That would've lasted one heavy rain.

We went at it the right way. A new culvert went in to give that water a controlled path through and out. We cut a drainage ditch along the slope side to intercept the runoff before it ever hits the driving surface. Then came fresh stone - graded and leveled across the full driveway - along with rip rap placed along the edges to lock everything in and handle the energy of moving water without letting it pull material away.

Rip rap gets overlooked, but it's one of the best tools for situations like this. Those larger, angular stones don't shift the way fine gravel does. Water flows around them, not through them, which means the driveway edge stays put even when you've got a hard downpour running off a hillside. Combined with the culvert and ditch, this driveway now has an actual drainage system - not just a surface patch.

This is the kind of work that pays for itself. A driveway that keeps washing out costs money every time you have to regrade it and haul in more material. Address the drainage source once, do it right, and you stop chasing the same problem every year.
